MORATORIUM. ITALIAN FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTRY, GENERAL ASSEMBLY VOTE ISN'T FOREGONE CONCLUSION

the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Pasquale Ferrara, cautioned that “vigilance is required until the end.”
“It is not a foregone conclusion” that the UN General Assembly will vote in favour of the resolution for the Moratorium on capital punishment wanted by Italy. He also assured that “Italy will continue its commitment.”
“We are coming from the favourable vote at the General Assembly’s Third Commission, but, along with the other co-sponsors of the resolution, we must be fully aware that a positive outcome is not a foregone conclusion.”
For this, Ferrara added, “we are working intensely to ensure the General Assembly has the necessary votes to approve the Moratorium.”
We must not forget that in the Third Commission there was “a consistent number of abstentions.” We do not know if they will maintain their position in the General Assembly.
”It’s a struggle that is ongoing”, Ferrara concluded. He also reminded that Massimo D'Alema will be in New York for commitments at the Security Council at the time of the vote.
