Morocco retains the death penalty for ordinary crimes in its penal code. It is subject to pardon that remains the constitutional prerogative of the Sovereign. A new anti-terrorist law passed by parliament in May 2003 broadened the range of crimes punishable by death and provides for stiffer sentences for crimes with terrorism links.
