MP Abdolnaser Qavami, head of the Majlis Judicial Committee, said Islamic punishments should not be carried out in public.
"Carrying out state punishments in public is not appropriate. In the case of Islamic punishments, too, [carrying them out] in public is very rare. For example, in the case of stoning; even then, there are certain conditions. It has not been stated that it should be carried out in public, but that it should be carried out in the presence of a group of religious people. Nowhere has it been explicitly stated that Islamic punishments must be carried out in public. In view of the circumstances of time and place, it is not at all appropriate to do this at the present time," he told the Iranian newspaper Hayat-e Now.
