MP Monirul Haq Chowdhury brought a resolution seeking capital punishment for peddling in phensidyl and other drugs but later withdrew it saying that he retracted it only because he was a treasury-bench lawmaker. Chowdhury stated that existing law was inadequate to deal with drug trafficking as since introduction of the1990 narcotics law only one person had been awarded life imprisonment.
