Mr Oteng Modisane Ping submitted an application for mercy from President Festus Mogae of Botswana. Mr Ping's death sentence was confirmed by the Court of Appeal (the highest court in Botswana) on 26 January 2006. He was convicted on two counts of murder. The first for the death of his former girlfriend, to which he was sentenced to fifteen years imprisonment and the second for the murder of his girlfriend's son. On the first count, the Court found extenuating circumstances based on the allegation that his girlfriend had stabbed him during the commission of the offences.
