Neither Egyptian law experts nor political analysts believe that a death sentence will be handed down to former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, “Al-Ahram” weekly reports. Professor of Criminal Law at the Cairo University Fauzia Abd-as-Sattar says that according to the current legislation, before a death penalty is delivered it must be approved by the Grand Mufti of Egypt. However, the verdict of “not guilty” or a mild punishment could trigger a wave of protests across the country, a well-known political analyst, Hasan Nafia, says. An Egypt Court will deliver a verdict to Mubarak, his sons and the former heads of the Egyptian Interior Ministry on June 2nd. Mubarak is accused of allegedly giving orders to fire at protesters during the 2011 January unrest as well as committing a number of corruption crimes.
