human rights activists said the government must take immediate steps to stop the death sentence of five Nepalese nationals charged with drug trafficking in Indonesia.
An Indonesian court had found the five Nepalese guilty of drug smuggling in 1999. With their scheduled executions just months away, the families of the five Nepalese appealed to human rights activists and the media for help. The arrested had been identified as Indra Kumar Tamang and Bala Tamang of Nuwakot district, Narbahadur Tamang of Dhading, Til Bahadur Bhandari and Bir Bahadur Gurung.
Amnesty International had sent a letter to Indonesia containing signatures appealing for their life. The National Human Rights Commission had also made an appeal against the death sentences to the Indonesian Human Rights Commission.
