New Jersey moved closer to becoming the 1st state to abolish the death penalty since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated it in 1976.
A Senate budget committee approved replacing capital punishment with life in prison without parole.
It was approved 8-4, with Democrats supporting it and Republicans opposing.
The bill can be considered for a full Senate vote. Gov. Jon S. Corzine, a death penalty foe, supports the bill.
