New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez will oppose tax increases, work to reinstate death penalty. Gov. Susana Martinez today said she would oppose any tax increases, work to reinstate the death penalty and cut school bureaucracies that drain money from classrooms. Martinez, in her inaugural State of the State speech, said government had created a financial mess in New Mexico simply by spending too much. "Our financial house is a mess, and it's time that we clean it up," she said of a deficit she estimated at $450 million. Democrats still control the House and the Senate, and Martinez ended her speech with a call for cooperation.
