NEW MEXICO, USA. HOUSE PASSES DEATH PENALTY REPEAL

the House of New Mexico voted to abolish the death penalty in the state and replace it with a sentence of life without parole.
The repeal bill passed on a vote of 38-to-31. It now goes to the Senate.
Death penalty opponents have tried to get the law repealed for about eight years. The vote was the first time during that effort the full House had voted on it.
There are two men on New Mexico’s death row. If the bill were to be enacted into law, it would not affect their death sentences.
The state of New Mexico had carried out one execution in 2001 since the reintroduction of the death penalty in the US in 1976. Four innocent people had been freed from death row in the state and five clemencies had been given.
