New Zealand opposed a death sentence handed down to Fiji coup leader George Speight, but said he should be jailed for life for overthrowing the South Pacific government in May 2000.
Speight was given a mandatory sentence to hang after pleading guilty on the opening day of his treason trial in Suva.
"We would expect that this (verdict) would result in a heavy penalty, though short of the death sentence," New Zealand Foreign Minister Phil Goff told reporters.
