NIGERIA. APPEAL COURT UPHOLDS DEATH SENTENCE OF TWO MEN FOR MURDER

a Court of Appeal in Ilorin, Nigeria’s Kwara State, confirmed the death sentence passed on Bayo Ajia and Olayinka Aare for the murder of two men in an Ilorin hotel.
The two had been condemned to death on March 31, 2005, by Justice J.F. Gbadeyan of the Ilorin High Court, who found them guilty of the murder of Abdul Yekini Gobir and AbdulGaniyu Isele. The two, both arch supporters of former Kwara state Governor Muhammad Lawal, had been condemned for mobilising two bus-loads of people suspected to be party thugs to invade a night party at Deens Motel, Ilorin, and killing Gobir and Isele upon arrival allegedly because they were supporters of the former governor’s political opponents.
