NIGERIA: EDO LAWMAKERS APPROVES DEATH SENTENCE FOR KIDNAPPERS

The Edo State House of Assembly on February 18, 2025 approved death sentence for kidnappers in the state.
DAILY POST reports that the death sentence followed the amendment of the 2013, the Edo State kidnapping prohibition law, which had provided for life imprisonment and confiscation of property allegedly used for kidnapping.
The House passed the death sentence during the amendment of the State Kidnapping prohibition law 2025.
The majority leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian, moved the motion for the amendment during plenary and seconded by the minority leader of the House, Eric Okaka, APC, representing Owan East constituency.
During the clause by clause consideration of the bill, the lawmakers amended the existing law 2013, which had provided for life imprisonment and confiscation of property allegedly used for kidnapping
The lawmakers, however, amended the law to provide a stiffer penalty of death sentence and confiscation of property used in the act.
