NIGERIA: FOUR ARMED ROBBERS SENTENCED TO DEATH IN ONDO

A state High Court sitting in Akure, Ondo State, sentenced four armed robbers to death by firing squad.
The robbers, who specialized in hijacking petroleum tankers, were Abdurahman Yinusa, Maliki Sanni, Ajayi Saliu and Mohammed Jimoh.
They were arrested in December 2009 and remanded at the Olokuta Medium Prison in Akure.
The Nation gathered that the convicted persons, with one other, who is still at large, operated at Isua/Idoani expressway in Ose local government area of Ondo State.
They were also accused of killing their victims for refusing to cooperate with them.
The convicted robbers were arraigned on a four-count charge of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, murder and illegal possession of fire arms contrary to section 6(b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act R11, Laws of Federation 2004.
The Prosecution Counsel, Mr. John Olowokere, said the gang last operation was the hijack of a petrol-ladden DAF truck with registration number XN 810 ABC along Isua/Idoani road in 2009.
Olowokere said three robbers drove in the truck to where they sold the product.
The Presiding judge, Justice D.I. Kolawole of the Special Criminal High Court located within Olokuta Medium Security Prison, said the victims were guilty of the charges filed against them.
Justice Kolawole ruled that the robbers should be killed by firing squad.
