Nigeria signed the letter, dated 22 July 1999, addressed to the President of the Economic and Social Council, in which the retentionist countries dissociated from the Commission on Human Rights resolution 1999/61 on the question of the death penalty.Nigeria was a cosponsor of the amendments presented by Egypt (A/C.3/54/L.31 and L.32) and amendments L.33, L.34, and L.47 to the resolution for a moratorium on executions presented by the European Union at the 54th UN General Assembly (A/C.3/54/L.8/Rev.1).The Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions sent two urgent appeals to the Government of Nigeria on behalf of individuals convicted of treason and sentenced to death by a military tribunal that did not meet international human rights standards (E/CN.4/1999/39/Add.1).
