The Government of Switzerland has urged the Nigerian Federal Government to address the continued implementation of the death penalty in the country.
Human Security Adviser in the Embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria, Pascal Holliger, said the Swiss Government also wants extra judicial killings and other forms of impunity in the country addressed.
Holliger disclosed this at a news conference organised by the National Human Rights Commission to herald the 2013 International Human Rights Day, which comes up on December 10.
The Swiss Government specifically also urged the FG to return to a state of moratorium on the death penalty, a situation whereby capital punishment will not be implemented, even if the country had not officially outlawed the practice.
“These are some of the issues we brought up in our discussions with Nigerian counterparts.
“We have several rounds of bilateral discussions with the Nigerian Government,” Holliger said.
