Death row inmate Charles Warner, who had been scheduled to die on the same night as the botched execution of Clayton Lockett, received a six-month stay of execution by the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals.
Lockett’s execution, carried out on April 29, after after 40 minutes of agony from the beginning of the lethal injection, has renewed the debate on the death penalty.
The Court of Appeals granted the stay, stating that the delay was granted in the hopes of ensuring conformity to best practices in lethal injection. The attorney general's office supported the decision. President Barack Obama, who backs the death penalty for heinous crimes, condemned the "deeply troubling" execution of Lockett. He has ordered Attorney General Eric Holder to conduct a policy review of how the death penalty is applied in the US.
