On April 19, the Inkatha Freedom Party said numerous surveys had shown that South Africans, irrespective of race, creed or color, were anxious about crime and believed the death penalty was an option. The IFP was committed to allowing South Africans to have a voice on the issue and had repeatedly called for a referendum on the death penalty "so that once and for all citizens can, as a first step, give government their clear and unequivocal view."
