On April 23, Yuhui Li was sentenced to death in China for crimes committed in Hong Kong. The special Administrative Region did not ask to judge him because there is no official agreement with China on the transfer of suspected fugitives (see China). The case was the second high-profile trial in China for crimes committed in Hong Kong since the territory reverted from British to Chinese rule in July 1997. After Li's conviction and sentencing, the Hong Kong Bar Association called for an agreement between mainland and Hong Kong officials on jurisdiction and the transfer of fugitives to ensure that crimes committed in Hong Kong would be tried in the territory. It said the modus operandi of the case was cruel and the consequences serious.
