On April 29, President Rafiq Tarar issued an Ordinance to amend the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 and turned special courts into anti-terrorism courts, following the Supreme Court's decision on February 17 to strike down military trial courts. Simultaneously, all cases pending before the (now defunct and illegal) military courts would be transferred to the new anti-terrorism courts, both at the trial and appeal stages. The trial in such cases would continue from the stage it had reached before the military courts.
