On August 25, a delegation composed of the Hon. Enzo Trantino, representative of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Ambassador Claudio Moreno, and Sergio d'Elia and Elisabetta Zamparutti of Hands off Cain, met with Foreign Minister Mark Isaac, Interior Minister Elvin Nimrod and Attorney General Lawrence A. Joseph to convince Grenada to adopt a moratorium on executions.
The Interior Minister said that the death penalty is an institution inherited from colonization and that it is a very controversial issue in the country. He thinks it very important to set up educational programs on this issue.
The Foreign Minister pointed out that the Government has not yet taken any position on the death penalty. "Sooner or later, we must resolve our 'to be or not to be' about the death penalty," he said.
The Attorney General affirmed that the death penalty has not been carried out in a long time and that the death sentences for the murderers of Maurice Bishop were commuted to life imprisonment in 1991.
