On August 26, the Ukrainian Supreme Court left unchanged the death penalty for the serial killer Onopriyenko. The Supreme Court was considering an appeal from a lawyer who asked the Court on his own behalf to commute the death penalty for Onopriyenko and to replace it with imprisonment. Both Onopriyenko and his accomplice Sergei Rogozin were sentenced by the Zhytomyr Regional Court, the latter receiving 13 years imprisonment. Their case will be considered by a special presidential commission, but the President has the supreme right to accept or reject its decision, Vasily Malyarenko, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court who was presiding at the session, said after the verdict was announced.
