On December 10, 1998, Belgium ratified Protocol No. 6 to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms that came into force on January 1, 1999, as well as the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights aiming at the abolition of the death penalty.
