On December 12, 1999, Hands off Cain, together with Amnesty International and the St Egidio Community, inaugurated the initiative "The Coliseum Illuminates Life". Throughout 2000 the ancient monument synonymous with Rome was lit up every time a State decided to impose a moratorium on executions or abolish the death penalty, and also when an execution was suspended or a death sentence commuted. The lights burned gold fourteen times in 2000.
