On December 30, Condemned prisoner Ronald Gabula said over 50 death convicts would soon go to the gallows if President Museveni did not pardon them immediately. He added that 217 prisoners on death row in Luzira Prison have appealed to the President for clemency. Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, the Anglican archbishop, Livingstone Nkoyoyo, Papal representative Christopher Pierre Aportolire, Uganda Muslim Supreme Council Secretary-General Hajji Edirisa Kasenene and the Commissioner for Prisons, Joseph Etima, backed the prisoners' request and called on the Government to abolish the death sentence. The clergymen conducted an ecumenical service at the prison complex to welcome the new millennium.
