On January 22, a Guatemala City court handed down 100-year sentences to each of 4 police detectives, including the former chief of an anti-kidnapping squad, finding them guilty of 2 kidnappings. A fifth detective received a 50-year sentence for one kidnapping. But the three-judge panel that heard the case ruled that while kidnapping is a capital crime under local law, Guatemala has signed international human rights accords that limit the death penalty to murder cases.
