On July 22, the Bahamian Mercy Committee reviewed the capital sentences of John Higgs, 50, and David Mitchell, 26, and advised that mercy was not warranted. Higgs, a businessman and beautician, was convicted in 1995 of murdering his wife Joan and hiding her body under the stairs of a building under construction. Mitchell, a laborer, was convicted in 1994 of stabbing to death a couple, Trajude and Horst Hennings, on the Bahamian island of Abaco.
