On June 17, Prime Minister Kenny Anthony said: "While the position on hanging was morally defensible, the cabinet supports the death penalty, a position we held through the election campaign." The Prime Minister further said that the Committee On The Prerogative Of Mercy had met and considered appeals for clemency, but had not reported on its findings. "The position has always been that Government will proceed to hang condemned prisoners in accordance with the laws of the country. We have no moral difficulty with hanging," he said.
