On June 3, Malawi's High Court Thursday ruled in Blantyre that prisoners be allowed to vote in all future elections in the country. The presiding judge, Justice Eric Kumitsonyo, said that prisoners, except those on death row, have a right to participate in civic duty, including voting. The judgment was in favor of a local human rights organization, the Civil Liberties Committee, which had sued the Malawi Electoral Commission for barring prisoners from voting. "The right of prisoners to vote is recognized and there is nothing in the Constitution to bar them from voting, except those under the death penalty," Kumitsonyo said.
