On March 14, a court sentenced Pavel Gorobets to death for murdering and dismembering one of his tenants, Viktor Grekhovodov, in December 1997, and his girlfriend Valentina Kashina, in March 1998 before eating their flesh. He was charged with the murders in February. Judge Marat Osmonkulov said he had confessed to the crime and was officially sentenced for double murder because Kyrgyzstan has no provision for cannibalism in its legal code. If the moratorium is not extended, Gorobets would be put to death once it expired in December 2000, Osmonkulov said.
