On November 10, speaking at the Third Committee of the General Assembly, the representative of Trinidad and Tobago referred to the portion of the statement by Finland on behalf of the European Union regarding the death penalty. He said the concept of sovereignty implied the right of every State to exclusive jurisdiction. Nothing authorized the United Nations to interfere in the internal affairs of states. The decision to maintain or abolish the death penalty was the sovereign right of a state.
