On November 11, Wator Abata Asharij Zembini, 29, a Sri Lankan bus driver at a private school, was put to death by firing squad for the premeditated murder of an 18-year-old national, Nasser Abdullatif Mohammed Al Obaidli, in October 1998. The execution was attended by the victim's family. Twice they were asked if they wished to waive their demand for the death penalty. Both times they refused. The condemned man's wife and mother visited him prior to the execution. Wator reportedly appeared calm and seemed to have accepted his fate. He embraced Islam on June 8 and chose to be called Abdul Rahman. He performed prayers shortly before the execution.
