On November 11, Zarina Mirafsur, a 27-year-old woman, was arrested together with 9 other suspects after an early morning raid at 5 apartments in a West Jakarta hotel. The raid uncovered 835 Ecstasy pills, 51.2g of shabu-shabu (crystal methamphetamine), 28 pornographic movies, 6 bongs and 2 small scales. Zarina, 27, was dubbed the "Ecstasy queen" two years ago after she was sentenced to 4 years in jail for possession of 29,677 Ecstasy pills. She was granted a conditional release on October 21 last year and worked for her former lawyer O.C. Kaligis until a few months ago. On November 15, at least 100 activists grouped in the People's Anti-Drug Movement, or Geram, packed City Hall and demanded the death sentence for Zarina Mirafsur if she is found guilty of drug offenses. Deputy Governor for Social welfare Affairs Djailani, who received the Geram activists, did not directly respond to the group's demand, but voiced strong support for their anti-drug campaign. Support for the death sentence even came from State Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mahadi Sinambela. According to Prosecutor S.Y. Nurfah at the Central Jakarta District Court, Zarina could well face the death penalty if prosecutors found her guilty of drug trafficking under Law no. 5. "Art. 2, Chapter 59 of the Law carries a maximum death sentence for persons found guilty of organizing drug trafficking," she said. However, Jakarta Police spokesman Lt. Col. Zainuri Lubis thought this outcome highly unlikely, saying that such a case had never happened in the country before. "The death sentence is not appropriate for our country," he said, referring to the Indonesia's Pancasila philosophy.
