On occasion of the visit to Italy of Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jibao, the Italian government and the Italian economists seemed positively impressed solely by the figures associated with Chinese development. However, there were also other figures to be taken into account before giving unconditional backing to China's regime.
China is the country that executes the more people in the rest of the world combined. The death penalty is a state secret, but according to Chinese parliamentarian Chen Zhonglin approximately 10,000 executions are carried out annually in the People's Republic of China, whilst judicial sources have revealed that at least 5,000 executions took place in 2003.
In March 2003, Han Zhubin, the country's top prosecutor, said that China should "vigorously fight separatists, terrorists and evil cult organizers for the sake of national security." Han stated that in the past five years 3,550 people had been prosecuted for "crimes against the state", including murders, bombings, arsons and also peaceful political protests.
Han also confirmed that the figure included suspected members of the Falun Gong, outlawed in 1999 as an "evil cult" and accused of trying to steal power from the Chinese communist party. Since they were first persecuted in 1999, 860 Falun Gong practitioners have so far been killed.
"Whist all this is happening in China, it is worrying that Italy didn't accept the requests of the Italian Falun Gong practitioners to demonstrate in Rome and Florence on occasion of the visit to Italy by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao," declared Hands Off Cain Secretary Sergio D'Elia.
