On October 1, the Assignment-Colmar Brunton poll found that 51% of respondents believed the death penalty should be an option for certain types of crime, and 41% opposed the death penalty. Those more likely to support the death sentence were males, people from rural areas, and blue-collar workers. Of those against reintroduction of the death penalty, 77% favored convicted criminals being jailed for the "rest of their natural lives" for certain types of crime. When people supporting the death penalty were asked which of 4 methods of execution they believed was most appropriate,71% supported lethal injection, 11% hanging, 9% electrocution, and 2% the gas chamber. Eighty-seven per cent favoring the death penalty believed it should be used for murder convictions.
