PAKISTAN: 84-YEAR-OLD CONVICT ON DEATH ROW GIVEN LIFE SENTENCE

A man who was sentenced to death in Pakistan heaved a sigh of relief as the Sindh High Court (SHC) converted his sentence into life imprisonment over flaws in the investigation.
Muhammad Aslam, 84, was awarded capital punishment for killing his wife, Naheed, in Karachi. The additional district and sessions’ judge South had also sentenced his brothers, Muhammad Ashraf and Ghafoor, to life imprisonment.
The convicts challenged the August 2008 judgment of the trial court, claiming their sentences were liable to be set aside, being awarded in violation of laws and a lack of evidence.
“The analysis of the evidence would lead to no other result except that the appellant Muhammad Aslam is guilty of the charge of Qatl-e-Amd of the deceased,” observed the two-judge bench. “We do not find any improbability or illegality in the judgment to that extent.”
