the family of a slain Pakistani taxi driver demanded that Mirza Tahir Hussain, the British man convicted of killing him, be immediately executed as President Pervez Musharraf granted him another stay of execution. Hussain-- who spent 18 years fighting his death sentence for killing a taxi driver in 1988 -- had been granted a one-month stay of execution in May by President Pervez Musharraf and another stay one month later. Hussain is of dual British-Pakistani nationality and was to be executed on August 3, but had been given another stay of execution by Musharraf till September 1, an official at Adiala prison, near Islamabad, said.
The delay was granted in order to allow the family of Hussain to negotiate with the relatives of victim Jamshed Khan under Islamic law which allows the payment of “blood money” to the victim’s family, he said.
Khan’s uncle Sohbat Khan said the further stay of execution had saddened his family and in a statement described pressure from the British government as “murder of justice”.
“Our family wants justice and it had been waiting for 18 years for it. We will never compromise,” Imran Khan, a cousin of Jamshed Khan, said.
“We want the president and chief justice to order immediate implementation of the execution orders issued by courts,” Khan said.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair and other officials had appealed to Musharraf to commute the death sentence to life imprisonment.
