PAKISTAN. FOUR MEMBERS OF A FAMILY HANGED IN BHAWALPUR JAIL

Pakistani authorities hanged four men from the same family who had been convicted of murdering local rivals over a small chunk of land, jail superintendent Tariq Babur Khan said. The men—a father, his two sons and his elder brother—were executed at the central jail in Bahawalpur city after losing an 11-year legal battle against the sentence. They were convicted and condemned to die by a court in 1995 for shooting dead a local man and his four sons on December 13, 1993, in the rural town of Haroonabad.
Both sides claimed they owned a patch of farmland measuring about the size of two volleyball courts. Appeals against their death sentences had been rejected by higher courts.
Their execution had been suspended twice, on June 28 and August 1, 2006, in an attempt for the convicts to reconcile with the family of the deceased.
