Pakistan: Man sentenced to death, brother gets life term for double murder in 2021

A model court has sentenced a man to death on two counts while his brother was awarded life imprisonment in a double murder case, The News Pakistan reported on August 30, 2026.

Babar and Muhammad Jawed were found guilty of killing the latter’s wife Sofia and Abdul Yasir in Lyari in 2021.

After hearing state prosecutor Shakeel Ahmed Abbasi and defence side, Additional Sessions Judge Abdul Hafeez Lashari of the Model Criminal Trial Court (South) sentenced accused Babar to death on two counts for double murder. “He shall be hanged by the neck until dead subject to confirmation by the Honourable High Court of Sindh,” said the judge.

“Babar was the principal offender and actual shooter. He fired upon Yasir, threatened the persons attempting to enter, escaped with the pistol and later concealed it,” noted the judge.

“The same weapon was connected with all six crime empties. Two persons were deliberately murdered in separate rooms, and no mitigating circumstance is available in favour of Babar. His conduct before, during and after the occurrence makes the case one deserving the major penalty.”

Accused Jawed was handed down life imprisonment on two counts for the murder of his wife and the other man. “The allegation upon accused was that he shared the common intention and actively assisted accused Babar by holding or pushing Yasir during the firing,” the judge said.

Both were ordered to pay Rs500,000 to the family of each deceased or undergo additional imprisonment on default.

About the motive, the judge said: “The prosecution suggested that both accused suspected an illicit relationship between Abdul Yasir and Sofia and that the marriage between Accused Jawed and Sofia was strained.”

However, the court added that the IO admitted that no witness mentioned the motive in their statement and that he had no proof of an illicit relationship.

According to the prosecution, on May 31, 2021, the incident occurred inside the house of accused Muhammad Jawed in Kalakot, Lyari. Both accused were present inside the house along with deceased Abdul Yasir and Sofia.

Accused Babar, who was armed with a 32-bore pistol, opened fire upon both deceased and committed their murder and fled the scene.
