PAKISTAN. NEW EXECUTION DATE SET FOR BRITON

the brother of a Leeds man on death row in Pakistan made an urgent appeal for his life after hearing he was to be executed in two weeks. Mirza Tahir Hussain, 36, was set to be hanged on 1 November for the murder of a taxi driver 18 years back. His brother Amjad and Amnesty International called on Pakistan's president to halt the execution.
Amjad Hussain said: "This is now a matter of utmost urgency as time is fast running out for my brother.
"President Musharraf does have the power to step in and stop the execution of an innocent man - and he should exercise it.
"I implore President Musharraf to end our agony and commute the sentence immediately."
Hussain has always claimed he was acting in self-defence, saying the taxi driver tried to sexually assault him.
His conviction was overturned in Pakistan's High Court, but he was later retried by an Islamic court, which sentenced him to death.
