Pakistan police claimed to have arrested one of the four suspects in the gang-rape of a teenaged girl even as the government said the culprits would be tried under anti-terrorism laws, which entail the death sentence.
One of the alleged rapists, Abdul Khaliq, was arrested after a raid in a poultry farm in southwestern Baluchistan province, said Col. Farman Ali, a senior police officer.
"The Government will take it as an act of terrorism that entails death punishment," Pakistan's Law Minister, Khalid Ranjha told BBC. He added the culprits would be tried by an anti-terrorism court.
Regarding claims that the rape was part of verdict by the village elders jury called Jirga, he said Pakistani law does not recognise such tribal juries.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Women, Atiya Inayatullah, visited the remote Meerwala village in Punjab Province and handed over a cheque of Rs 500,000 from President Gen. Pervez Musahrraf to the family of the victim.
The four men allegedly raped the girl on June 22 following a Jirga order, because her 11-year-old brother was seen with a woman not related to him-a crime punishable by death in some remote and conservative areas of Pakistan.
Reports said police have detained nine persons in connection with the case.
