Pham Tan Luong, 20, was sentenced to death by Gia Lai People's Court for murder.
It was alleged that on July 6, 2003, he sneaked into a neighbour's garden to steal some durian fruit, but was caught in the act by the 11-year-old daughter of the owner.
He beat her to death and stabbed her in the throat with a branch from a coffee tree but was arrested later the same day.
