Philippine Labour Secretary Patricia Santo Tomas said she would ask the Saudi Arabian government to spare the lives of three overseas Filipino workers sentenced to execution in the Middle East kingdom during the six-day visit to Saudi Arabia from May 23 to 28.
She said the top priority of her visit is to secure clemency for the three Filipino murder convicts - Idan Tejano, Joselito Alejo and Ramiro Esmero.
"We have to appeal for clemency. We don't know when the execution will take place." Amid pleas from the families of the three convicts, the Department of Labour and Employment officials in Manila earlier explained the Philippine government could not ask the Saudi Arabian government to release the workers because had the situation been reversed, the Philippines might not allow the foreign suspects to go free, and clemency is the best they could do.
During the visit to Saudi Arabia, department officials will discuss the creation of standardised guidelines for domestic helpers.
