Polish conservative candidate for president Lech Kaczynski he would restore the death penalty if given the chance, putting his views on a collision course with the European Union. Kaczynski was five points behind moderate frontrunner Donald Tusk ahead of the October 9 presidential election after his Law and Justice party won September 25 parliamentary polls. The party was seeking to form a centre-right coalition government.
"If parliament would pass a law re-establishing the death penalty, I would sign it," Kaczynski told reporters during a campaign trip to Wroclaw in southwestern Poland.
