Police ordered seven men to get down from a bus - and then executed them in cold blood and in full public view. They searched the men for weapons, recovering three pistols, then ordered them to lie on their faces before opening fire, pumping bullets into their bodies just yards from the Mombasa Highway in Nairobi.
One other man was spared because the officers were not sure if he was part of a gang they later claimed was on its way to raid a bank in Athi River town. He was arrested.
About 10 of the officers involved in the shooting belong to a special response squad codenamed Delta based at Nairobi provincial headquarters.
Witnesses contradicted police claims that the seven men were killed in a shoot-out. They said one of the men was shot dead by police in front of the passengers before the others were told to get back on the bus and the driver was told to continue his journey. The seven men were all killed on open ground and the witnesses had a clear view of what took place. The bullets' entry points appeared to corroborate the witnesses' accounts; most of the victims having been shot from the back with the bullets exiting from the front.
