Police recaptured a convict who escaped with 78 other prisoners from a maximum-security jail on Guatemala's southern coast on June 17, 2001, but 19 of the escapees remain at large.
Government spokesman Rodolfo Zelada said convict Edward Mike Pineda was caught on April 22 in Villalobos in southern Guatemala.
Pineda, 31, a member of the "El Tejano" ("The Texan") gang, was convicted and sentenced to death in 1999 for several kidnappings in 1996 and 1997.
Zelada noted that Pineda escaped along with 77 other convicts from the high-security prison known as "El Infierno" ("The Hell Hole"), located in the southern province of Escuintla.
Police have recaptured 49 of the escaped convicts, 10 died under a variety of circumstances following the massive jailbreak, and 19 still remain at large, the spokesman said.
Pineda was found hiding inside a tunnel he had dug under a bed in a house in the Villalobos neighborhood, and police are investigating to determine whether he committed other crimes after escaping from prison.
