President Askar Akayev pardoned six men found guilty of plotting to assassinate him

President Askar Akayev pardoned six men found guilty of plotting to assassinate him. They had all been sentenced to jail terms and appealed for clemency. The amnesty did not include prominent politician Tupchebek Turgunaliyev, who remains in jail. Akayev also urged his government to consider abolishing the death penalty next year.
