President Thabo Mbeki and several South African political parties expressed their sorrow at news of the death of Chief Justice Ismail Mohamed. He was South Africa's first black Chief Justice and one of the country's top civil rights lawyers. He defended many anti-apartheid activists in political trials and was the author of Namibia's Constitution, which abolished capital punishment.
