Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Advocates' Conference 2000, said that the people wanted due punishment for the killers of his father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the judiciary would have to fulfill the expectations of the people. Observers said Sheikh Hasina appeared determined that the executions be carried out before the general election due next year. Chief Justice Latifur Rahman urged lawyers to help keep the court out of the purview of politics saying that entrance of politics in the judiciary arena would erode people's confidence in justice.
