Prime Minister Tony Blair has been asked to step in to save death row Scot Kenny Richey from execution.
SNP MSP Margo MacDonald said fresh evidence indicated a "grave miscarriage of justice" had taken place. Edinburgh-born Richey was sentenced to death in the USA for murdering the two-year-old daughter of his ex-girlfriend by setting fire to her flat.
Lawyers representing him were told that they had to lodge their appeal by July 1 and it could be heard this autumn. MacDonald claims Richey was badly represented at his original trial and forensic experts who gave evidence against him had been discredited.
She added: "There is a precedent for the British Government seeking to advise the US government of their concern relating to a death sentence passed on a prisoner with close British family connections."
